Lefkada or Lefkas is an island in the Ionian Sea and together with the islands of Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos and Paxi complete the Ionian Islands. Her name, Lefkada,
came from Cape Lefkata, located at the southernmost tip of the island.
It is the fourth largest island of the Ionian. It is located across from the Northwest side of Etoloacarnania, which is separated by a shallow lagoon and a narrow canal. It is 325 sq. Km and its current population is about 23,000 inhabitants.
In 1963 the Greek Aristotle Onassis bought Scorpios, a small island situated opposite the eastern coasts of Lefkada and more specifically in the cosmopolitan Nydri, which has
gained worldwide reputation, hosting from time to time many visitors and celebrities.
In 2012 it was bought by the Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev as a gift for the birthday of his daughter Ekaterina.
Nowadays, the main forms of economy on the island are tourism, which in recent years has increased greatly, making Lefkada one of the most famous summer destinations in the
Mediterranean.
The inhabitants are even engaged in agriculture, viticulture, olive oil and fishing. From the old days until today, they have been a very important role in the development of
the place.
